Culture & Sensitivity – Tissue:

Why Culture and Sensitivity - Tissue Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

General culture and sensitivity tests are used to determine the growth of harmful pathogenic microbes present in different tissues (epithelial, smooth, skeletal, nervous tissues etc) or body fluids (connective tissues) such as blood, saliva, breast milk and also sample specimens include urine, pus of a wound etc. The culture and sensitivity of tissue tests are also known as C/S Aerobic tissue or culture-sensitive aerobic test. Here in this test sample specimen of tissue of the body for culture and sensitivity is used to examine the growth of infective micro-organisms causing diseases thus helping in the initial screening. Further studies on tissue pathologies are subjected to additional studies like Immuno-histochemistry eg Antigen-Antibody reactions. The histopathological studies are considered the gold standard for confirmatory studies for tissue pathologies. Electron microscopy such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) may be required in certain cases for confirmation. A tissue test for culture and sensitivity is performed to enable the identification of microbial pathogens by culturing. Then the colonized culture is then seeded with different discs containing various types of antibiotics embedded into it. If the microbial growth is still visible it indicates resistant strain against antibiotics eg. MSRA. Whereas if there is a clear zone or zone of inhibition around it, then it exhibits inhibition thus showing susceptible strains.
