Alfa Peta Protein - CSF

Alfa-Feto Protein is a type of protein that is produced by the liver of a developing fetus. The level of AFP increases proportionately during fetal development (size of the fetus corresponds to the levels of AFP synthesis), and also in newborn babies (AFP levels gradually reduce with time). This AFP protein (cancer marker) is elevated in liver diseases and certain cancers and thus AFP is used as a screening test to diagnose the cancers of the liver, testicles, and/or ovaries.

Why Alpha Feto Protein (AFP) Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Alpha Feto-Protein (aAFP) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk-sac by the fetal liver during fetal development. Thus AFP test results help in either screening of maternal blood during gestation (reflects a disproportionate increase in AFP levels) to detect developmental abnormalities like aneuploidy (the developing fetus is suggestive of high-risk birth defects, genetic disorders, chromosomal abnormalities such as chromosome-21, chromosome-18, and chromosome-13 - (Down’s syndrome, etc), neural tube defects, i.e spina bifida) and/or certain tumors eg. Ascites in the peritoneal cavity. Thus this test becomes mandatory in women with a family history of birth defects (maternal test performed during pregnancy in the maternal serum sample specimen for alpha-fetoprotein – MSAFP screening is performed at 16 to 18 weeks of gestation) and/or patients suspected of certain cancers like hepatocellular carcinoma of the liver, testicles, ovaries, Hodgkin disease, lymphoma (chronic lymphocytic-leukemia - CLL) or non-cancerous liver disorders (regeneration of liver cells), hepatitis, fibrosis in fatty liver, cirrhosis of liver and stress.
