Why Blood Culture Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

A blood culture test helps doctors to figure out the kind of infection (bacteria, virus, parasitic infestation, etc) that has entered into the systemic circulation that can affect the entire body. After the phlebotomist draws a blood sample specimen gives it to the laboratory, where the patient’s blood is added to the suitable culture medium and in 24 to 48 or 72 hours the growth is checked for microbial growth in the medium.  This blood culture test result can help with the best treatment against the infection eg. Antifungal medications, medications that target gram-negative bacteria, broad-spectrum antibiotics, etc. This blood culture test is ordered with symptoms that may include fever or chills, fatigue, nausea, confusion, increased heart rate or breathing (respiratory rate) or signs such as inflammation, blood clots, drop in blood pressure and/or organ failure, etc. a positive test result indicate the presence of micro-organisms such as bacteria, virus in the blood. While negative test result rules out any signs of infections or infestations present in the body (blood – systemic circulation). This blood culture test result helps the physician in arriving at a diagnosis and has a significant role in ruling out other similar disease conditions (differential diagnosis) with related manifestations. Thus this test helps in screening, diagnosis, confirmation, and prognosis of diseases.
