Why Coombs direct Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Coombs direct test helps to detect antibodies that target the surface of RBCs, causes destruction of red blood cells leading to anemia eg jaundice in the newborn (hemolytic disease of the newborn), drug induce hemolysis such as penicillin, cephalosporin, piperacillin, etc, diseases like lupus, lymphoma, chronic lymphicytic leukemia, infections like mononucleosis, mycoplasma pneumonia, etc, reaction to blood transfusion, etc. Hence this test helps in confirmation of diagnosis and also to rule out to screen another differential diagnosis (possibilities), such as auto-immune disorders. Clinical manifestations mimics signs and symptoms for anemia like low RBCs, shortness of breath, cold and clammy extremities, pale skin, dizziness, back pain, dark urine, heart disorders like irregular heartbeat, heart murmur, heart failure, and other symptoms include jaundice, enlarged liver and/or spleen, etc. Coombs test screens for certain antibodies that can lyse the RBCs causing hemolytic anemia. Conditions that may interfere with test results are medications such as penicillin (antibiotics), anti-inflammatory medications, antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel, chemotherapy medications, etc.
