The centromere is a protein present in the constricted region of a chromosome. Auto-antibodies are generated by a defective Immune System that sometimes attacks the self-antigens such as centromeres considered as foreign. This test evaluates the centromere antibodies in the blood to diagnose cutaneous scleroderma (formerly called CREST Syndrome).

Why Centromere Antibody Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Centromere Antibodies helps primarily to diagnose the auto-immune disorder limited to cutaneous scleroderma, a form of systemic scleroderma and CREST syndrome. ACA are auto-antibodies specific to centromeres. They occur in some autoimmune diseases, frequently in systemic scleroderma (formerly called CREST syndrome). ACA is a positive test for systemic scleroderma and involves cutaneous involvement and can cause lung fibrosis. ACAs are also found associated with primary biliary cirrhosis with portal hypertension.

Sample Requirement: Specimen - Blood sample collected from the vein. Test Preparation: None.
