Cell Count For Fluid

Other than blood and urine, there are other bodily fluids like Synovial Fluid, Pleural Fluid, Ascitic Fluid, etc, and one such vital fluid present in the brain (CNS – anatomically present within the skull and vertebral column) is CSF. Cells in these fluids get elevated due to the unhealthy condition. This test evaluates the cells count to uncover infections and causes of their associated inflammations.

Why Cell count (fluid) Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Body-fluid cell counting provides the most valuable information for the diagnosis and treatment of variety of conditions using body fluids i.e trauma (increased RBCs in hemorrhage), diagnosis of joint diseases, systemic diseases, inflammation & infection (increased WBCs eg. macrophages), viral infections (increase in lymphocytes), malignancy (immature RBCs and/or WBCs) and parasitic & fungal infections (an increase in eosinophil count), etc. Furthermore, other vital key tests on body fluids are also performed to screen for signs of infections or inflammations,  for eg. Gram stain, Culture test helps to find the type of bacteria causing infection, and sensitivity tests (eg. Antibiotic sensitivity test), as which antibiotic will be most effective and/or test antibiotic-resistant strains. Gold Standard Method for Cell Counting is Optical Microscopy. Other studies include flow-cytometry. Flow Cytometry is a powerful and versatile analytical technology. Hence flow cytometry immune-phenotyping may be useful in helping to screen - diagnose, classify, treat and determine prognosis of certain abnormal pathological conditions such as blood cell cancers (immature blood cells), neutropenia, aplastic anemia, infections, and also in normal differential blood testing for counting WBCs (subtypes of WBCs). Hence this flow cytometer serves as a vital diagnostic tool in conditions such as inflammatory diseases, immunity-related diseases, anemia, leukemia, and certain congenital conditions, etc. Cell count (fluid) test may be present in increased volumes and/or may contain increased numbers of normal or abnormal cells in some conditions. Thus this test helps in investigating biological sample specimens such as CSF, blood, urine, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, ascetic fluid, etc, and thus helps screen –diagnose and confirm certain abnormal pathological conditions.
