CD-19 FLOW CYTOMETRY:

Why CD19 Flow Cytometry Test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION

CD 19 is a marker (CD – Cluster of differentiation) for B-cells – a biomarker for normal and neoplastic B cells as well as follicular dentritic cells. Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry is a laboratory method that detects the presence or absence of WBC markers called CD - antigens. Flow Cytometry test for CD19 antigens performed to determine the cause and type of leukemia or lymphoma (B cell cancers - leukemia or lymphoma are caused by abnormal white blood cells that begin to divide uncontrollably, producing clones – but they do not fight infections or perform other functions like normal WBC’s and as they do not die at the normal rate they accumulate in the bone marrow and their crowd-out may inhibit the production of normal RBC, WBC, and platelets and are released into the bloodstream. As the number of abnormal cells increases the size of the lymph nodes also increases concurrently and simultaneously on the bone marrow). Moreover, it can also be used to direct and monitor (it can establish intrinsic B cell signaling thresholds through modulating both B cell receptor-dependent and independent signaling) treatment approaches for B-cell cancers and autoimmune diseases related to CD19. Hence flow cytometry immunophenotyping may be useful in helping to diagnose, classify, treat and determine the prognosis of these blood cell cancers. Clinical manifestation (signs and symptoms) of blood cancer include – feeling tired and rundown, weakness, headaches, vomiting, night sweats, unexplained loss of weight or appetite, shortness of breath during physical activity, pale skin, bruising or bleeding easily, fever, bone, and joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes, spleen, kidney, liver and/or testicles, etc.
