BK Polyomavirus ( BKV DNA Qualitative RT - PCR )
BK Virus causes diseases to the patients who had undergone the kidney transplant. This test measured the quantity of the BK virus in the blood or urine to detect BK virus-related health issues (BK Nephropathy). Quantitative PCR assists to monitor the infection in the treatment process.

BK Polyomavirus RT-PCR helps to primarily monitor BK viral load in urine (viruria) and plasma (viremia) of renal transplant patients who are at risk of developing BK virus-associated nephropathy (BKVAN).
BKV also known as polyomavirus hominis – 1, was first isolated in 1971 from the urine of a renal transplant patient. It is a non-enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the polyomavirus family that infects primarily in the urothelium at latency. This test screens to determine the presence of BK virus DNA in the patient’s body and hence helps in early detection which can help in prevention morbidity from further damage to kidneys leading to ureteral stenosis, interstitial nephritis, etc. the screened results can be confirmed by histopathological studies and molecular diagnosis such as PRT techniques. Causes of BKV are the recipient of a kidney transplant, bone marrow transplant leading to hemorrhagic cystitis, multifocal leukoencephalopathy in immune-compromised patients, etc.
