Why Bile Pigments and Bile Salts test?


Bile salts are the primary components of bile. Bile Pigments and Bile Salts test is done to detect the presence of bile pigments in urine eg. In liver diseases i.e hepatitis, jaundice etc. This test is diagnostic for cholestasis. Bile increases the absorption of fats (emulsification) and fat soluble substances like vitamin A, D, E and K. besides its fat digestive function bile also aids in excretion of bilirubin and helps in neutralization of HCL and prevent decomposition. Deficiency of bile salts (in case of gall bladder removal) can lead to complications such as kidney stones, irritable bowel syndrome.
