Why Band Count test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

Band Count is immature neutrophils produced by WBCs, undergoing granulopoiesis derived from metamyelocyte leading to a mature granulocyte. These band cells are seen excessively during infections. Bands are also known as stab cells, segmented bands, characterized by having a curved but not lobular nucleus. Apart from infections elevated band counts are also seen secondary to inflammation, tissue damage or necrosis, neoplasia, intoxication, metabolic abnormalities, hemorrhage, hemolysis, or certain drugs. Bandemia is the term used to describe many WBCs released by the bone marrow. This indicates infection or the presence of inflammation. Certain conditions associated with bandemia are leukemia, auto-immune diseases (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, type-1 diabetes, etc), radiation, and/or therapy.  Symptoms of bandemia are easy bruising, excessive bleeding, fever, night sweats, fatigue, and frequent infections.
