Apolipoprotein B/ A1 Ratio

Apolipoprotein-B and Apolipoprotein A involved in the metabolism process of lipids and which are the main constituent protein in the High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) respectively. This test measures Apolipoprotein B and A₁ and calculates the ratio to detect the risks of occurrence in Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVD).

APOLIPOPROTEIN B/A RATIO:

Why ApolipoproteinB/A1 test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

ApolipoproteinB/A1ratio is a potential marker of plasma atherogenicity since this ratio represents the balance between Apo-B rich atherogenic particles and Apo- A1 rich anti-atherogenic particles. Hence this ratio is considered to be a marker of cardiovascular risk.

Apo-A1 measures A1 protein (the main component of HDL) that has a specific role in the metabolism of lipids. Hence other than Apo-A1 other lipid tests as a part of the lipid profile may be ordered to determine the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Thus low Apo-A1 level signifies the risk of heart diseases like atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease eg. Coronary artery disease and that too when specifically the levels of Apo-lipoprotein-B –An atherogenic lipoprotein (which directly corresponds to LDL-C and to non-HDL-C) are high. Apo B is a primarily integral apoprotein required for the formation of low-density lipoprotein – LDL (bad cholesterol). Apo B-100 serves as a signal for cellular binding and internalization of LDL particles by apo B/E receptors. Apolipoprotein-B is the primary apolipoprotein of chylomicrons (Apo B-48), VLDL (Apo B-100), IDL, LDL (Apo B-100), and lp(a). Apo-B-48 is composed of 2521 amino acids and is essential for the formation of chylomicrons and Apo-B-48 is also responsible for the absorption of dietary fat from the intestine. Thus high levels of Apo-B can lead to plaques causing atherosclerosis and heart diseases.
