Why ACE test?

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

ACE is an angiotensin-converting enzyme. The ACE test is primarily ordered to help diagnose and monitor sarcoidosis. It is often ordered as a part of an investigation in chronic troubling cases due to sarcoidosis. Higher levels than normal ACE is found in cirrhosis, Gaucher’s disease, psoriasis, amyloidosis, diabetes, HIV, histoplasmosis, hyperthyroidism, etc. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease in which granulomas or clumps of inflammatory cells are formed in various organs. The cause for this organ inflammation in sarcoidosis are agents like viruses, bacteria, chemicals, etc. the commonly affected organs in sarcoidosis are lymph nodes, lungs, eyes, skin (hair loss), liver, heart, and brain (seizures, hearing loss, and headaches). Signs and symptoms of sarcoidosis are fatigue, fever, weight loss, joint pain, dry mouth, nose bleeds, and abdominal swelling. Other tests other than ACE includes diagnosis includes clinical examination for findings of signs and symptoms like swollen lymph nodes, auscultation of heart and lungs (for abnormal heart sounds like murmurs – like rasping and whooshing) and (abnormal lung sounds like rhonchi, crackles, wheeze, stridor), palpation for hepatomegaly or/and splenomegaly, chest X-ray for granulomas, CT-scan of chest, lung function test, kidney function test and liver function tests, etc.
