A- ANTITRYPSIN (A1AT):

Alpha- Antitrypsin is a protein substance that prevents the lungs from the destructive Enzymes. This test is helpful for diagnosing lung disorders like emphysema and also monitors the deficiency of A₁ Antitrypsin. This test is also known as A₁AT and AAT.

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT) is a circulating liver derived serine protease inhibitor (The main function is to balance the action of a neutrophil-protease enzyme in the lung i.e. neutrophil elastase enzyme produced by the neutrophils in the presence of inflammation, infection, or smoking) and it protects the lungs from damage and diseases like emphysema and COPD. High levels of these enzymes are found to stimulate tumor cell proliferation and invasions in different cancers. Deficiency of alpha-1 antitrypsin can cause various medical complications of the lungs, liver, and skin (Panniculitis - inflammation of fatty tissue under the skin), including COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and cirrhosis of the liver. Symptoms of alpha-1 antitrypsin are feeling tired, faster heartbeat when standing (postural hypertension), weight loss, yellow urine, yellowish eyes and/or skin, swollen legs or belly, coughing up blood etc. Other associated tests include bronchoscopy (for biopsy from lungs), colorimetric methods, spectroscopic methods, kit methods, etc.
