# Alkaline Phosphatase

ALP is an enzyme found in the bloodstream and it is found in different forms depending on where it originates e.g. liver, bone, intestine, pancreas, kidneys, and placenta of pregnant women. It helps to break down the proteins in the body. This test used to help detect liver or bone disorders. This test is usually ordered along with other tests such as the gamma-glutamyl transferase (GTT) test and/or as part of the liver panel. Higher than normal levels of ALP in the blood may indicate problems in the liver or gall bladder. It can be due to hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, gall stones, or blockage in bile ducts.

SERUM ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE (ALP):

ALP- Alkaline Phosphatase is an enzyme present in the liver, bones, kidneys, and digestive system. Due to the liver damage, the ALP Enzyme level from the liver is expelled into the blood hence the enzyme level will be increased. This blood check-up used to detect the increase in ALP levels in the blood to detect liver and bone diseases.

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

This test is usually done when suspected with severe abnormal levels of serum ALP, which can signify a severe underlying medical condition related to the abnormalities of the liver, bones, or gall bladder. This test is suggested in patients with symptoms causing nausea and vomiting, weight loss, tiredness, weakness, jaundice, swelling and/or pain in the abdomen, dark-colored urine, and stool, frequent itching, etc. Other associated tests include fluorimetry methods, enzymatic methods, ELISA, and kit methods.
