Platelet is the main element of blood to prevent bleeding while injured. Platelet test count is also known as thrombocyte count&PLT. This Blood test calculates the number of platelets in the blood to detect the bleeding disorder and issues related to bone marrow.

This test is usually done for altered levels of platelets either high or low. This test is suggested in patients with HIGH PLATELETS leading to disorders or diseases such as anemia (low RBCs), blood loss, inflammatory disorders, splenectomy, cancer, chemotherapy, chronic myeloid leukemia (cancer of bone marrow), infection, etc., or in patients with low platelets leading to conditions such as viral infections (HIV-AIDS, hepatitis), medications (aspirin, H2-blockers, antibiotics like sulfa-drugs and certain diuretics), cancers (lymphoma and leukemia), aplastic anemia (where all kinds of blood cells are reduced), bacterial infections e.g. Sepsis (it can reduce platelet count) and autoimmune disorders i.e. lupus and Crohn’s disease (can reduce platelet count), chemotherapy, poisoning (pesticides), cirrhosis (excessive alcoholism) and chronic bleeding (stomach ulcers), etc.

Other associated tests include platelet function tests, plateletcrit, etc.
