# MCV

MCV is the average volume of red cells in a specimen. MCV is either increased or decreased in accordance with average red cell size (Normocytic). This test checks at the low MCV (small average RBC size-Microcytic) or high MCV (high average RBC size-Macrocytic)
Test Code: 690
₹ 100.00

MCV TEST:

MCV – Mean Corpuscular Volume. Blood has three kinds of corpuscles which are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

This test determines the average volume of red blood cells. This part of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) test will be used to detect problems of structural integrity in blood.

CLINICAL INFORMATION :

This test is usually done for Microcytic or Macrocytic RBCs (i.e. altered levels of average red cell size).  This test is suggested in patients with symptoms like fatigue, pale skin, and light-headedness for certain medical conditions to differentiate between types of anemia – e.g.Low MCV is seen in iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, anemia of chronic diseases, sideroblastic anemia, lead poisoning, spherocytosis and hemoglobinopathies, and high MCV is seen in macrocytic anemia due to deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B12, liver diseases, alcoholism, hypothyroidism, hemolytic anemias, cold agglutinin disease, myelodysplastic syndromes, aplastic anemias, chemotherapy drugs, chronic hypoxia due to low oxygen levels in the blood due to COPD, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc. Other associated tests include iron tests: serum iron, iron-binding capacity, and/or serum ferritin (for low MCH) and vitamin-B12, folic acid, etc., (for high MCH), etc.
